Mortality

The lessons of life are plain, simple and few:

Don’t get caught in the rain unless you

Want to get wet;

Try to avoid people, places and experiences that

Don’t make you smile;

Never count on anyone except yourself;

And never ever forget that you are

Already dead in the future.

Mortality, this necessity of living and dying,

Is the core of existence.

It is the lesson you have incarnated to learn:

To be who you are now, and then not to be,

To accept this gratefully and without despair,

Neither to run away from nor towards life,

But to view your life with eyes

Wide open to all that you see,

To bear witness without condemnation, despair,

Hate or recrimination,

To simply watch the passing of life as

A newborn child does, eyes wide open to eternity.
